My grandfather often says, “Humans have the chance to accomplish anything they can think of, but they can never accomplish what they don’t think of.”
「人間は考える事は実現する可能性があるけど、考えない事はできない」
That’s the importance of one’s imagination and curiosity. You need to place yourself in the future, and picture where you want to be (in the long and short term).
But don’t gravitate towards what is “doable” or “realistic.” Those are easy. Set goals that make you think “holy shit, how am I [ever] going to get there.”
Belief before ability
Even if you don’t achieve them, you’ll accomplish more than you’d think.
Last December, I decided to read 20 books in three weeks. I hadn’t read consistently in years, but I committed to it. By the end of the winter break, I had read 8 books—8 more than I would’ve normally. Although a small example, it applies to everything.
Goals enable us to better ourselves, the reason for our amazing (yet hidden) potential for the future.
What do you want* to achieve?
If you do not have goals, look inside. Are you already perfect? How long will you wait before you demand the best for yourself?
“The only way up” means to constantly improve yourself by reinventing what is you. Don’t be afraid to abandon what you were in favor of who you will become. Do what you find interesting and don’t just follow the status quo. The perfect time will never come, so start now.
And who cares if you “fail,” there’s always something to learn. Besides, if it’s a clear path, it’s probably someone else’s
*you want it because it’s already yours
